Primeiro série moedas cunhadas pelo decreto no. 54B, de 13 de dezembro 1889. A primeira série moedas da república do Brasil tem muita semelhanças com as moedas do ultimo imperador, Dom Pedro II. O anverso sobre as moedas de 100 e 200 réis ficou egual, só a legenda mudou. O valor de moeda tambem foi introduzido sobre as moedas de bronze de 20 e 40 réis. As moedas de prata e ouro de valor alto receberem uma imagem de uma mulher, a personificação do Brasil. Ela parece muito a Marianne, a personificação da França. Parece que a nova república procurou uma relação com a revolução na França. O reverso das moedas mudou totalmente. O escudo de Dom Pedro II foi substituido e sobre as moedas de 20 e 10000 réis foi introduzido o novo escudo do Brasil . O resto da série foi cunhado com um colar de 21 estrelas com 5 estrelas no centro. Todas as moedas têm a legenda: república dos estados unidos do Brazil. O nome é uma copia do grande vizinho EUA. Até mesmo o nome do país mudou sobre as moedas. Brasil com z como Brazil. Os cunhos foram gravados pelo gravador Francisco José Pinto Carneiro (sigla F.C. nas moedas de 40, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 10.000 e 20.000 réis. O cunho da moeda de 2000 réis é do Prof. Augusto Giorgio Girardet. As moedas de 2000 réis são conhecidas na numismatica como "três cabeças" pela cabeça grande da mulher e as três datas.

Eerste serie munten van de republiek Brazilië, geslagen volgens decreet nr. 54B van 13 december 1889. De eerste serie munten van de republiek Brazilië vertonen nog veel overeenkomsten met de munten van de laatste keizer, Dom Pedro II. De voorzijde op de 100 en 200 réis bleef gelijk, alleen de tekst werd aangepast. De beeldenaar met het waarde cijfer werd ook doorgevoerd op de bronzen munten van 20 en 40 réis. De zilveren en gouden munten van hoge waarde kregen de beeltenis van een vrouw welke de personificatie van Brazilië moet voorstellen. Zij lijkt erg veel op de Franse Marianne, er werd blijkbaar een verband gelegd tussen de Franse en Braziliaanse revolutie. De keerzijde van de munten kreeg een gewijzigde beeldenaar. Het wapen van Dom Pedro verdween en hiervoor in de plaats kwam op de munten van 20 en 10000 réis het nieuwe Braziliaanse wapen. Op de overige munten kwam een cirkel van 21 sterren met in het centrum 5 sterren. Op alle munten verscheen de tekst: república dos estados unidos do Brazil, republiek van de verenigde staten van Brazilië. Afgekeken van grote buur Noord-Amerika. Ook de naam Brazilië werd nu zelfs anders geschreven: Brazil met een z in plaatst van Brasil met een s. De stempels zijn gesneden door de graveur Francisco José Pinto Carneiro (initialen F.C. op de munten van 40, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 10.000 en 20.000 réis. Het stempel van de munt van 2000 réis is van de graveur Prof. Augusto Giorgio Girardet. De munten van 2000 réis staan in de Braziliaanse numismatiek bekend als "drie hoofden" vanwege het grote hoofd van de vrouw en de drie geslagen jaartallen.

First series of coins of the republic Brazil, minted by law nr. 54B of december 13th 1889. The first series of coins struck by the republic of Brazil have much similarities with the coins of the last emperor, Dom Pedro II. The obverse on the coins of 100 and 200 réis stayed the same, only the text changed. The large number representing the value of the coin was also introduced on the coins of 20 and 40 réis. The silver and gold coins of high value were struck with the image of a woman representing Brazil. She looks a lot like Marianne, the woman that represence France. Obviously the new Brazilian republic wanted to make a connection with the French and Brazilian revolution. The reverse of the coins was of a new design. The arms of Dom Pedro II was replaced and the coins of 20 and 10000 réis were struck with the new arms of Brasil. The other coins were struck with a circle of 21 stars with in the centre of the circle 5 stars. All the coins have the text: republic of the united states of Brazil. This was a copy of the name of their great neighbor, the united states of America. Even the name of Brazil changed on the coins, Brazil with a z. The dies were cut by the engraver Francisco José Pinto Carneiro (initials F.C. on the coins of 40, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 10.000 en 20.000 réis. The die for the of 2000 réis is from the hand of the engraver Prof. Augusto Giorgio Girardet. The coins of the 2000 réis are known in Brazilian numismatics as "three heads" because of the large womans head en the three dates that were struck.
