Foi creado por decreto lei No. 4 de 19 novembro do 1889.

A espada representa a justicia. A esfera central, de color azul, contem a constelacão da Cruz do Sul. Em volta da esfera tem 27 estrellas de prata. A esfera fica sobre uma grande estrella com os cores nacionais, verde e amarello. Esta estrella representa a unidade federativa do país. As folhas das plantas são: a esquerda, café e, a direita, tabaco. Em baixo o texto REPÚBLICA FEDERATIVA DO BRASIL e a data da proclamacão da república, dia 15 de novembro do 1889.

Het zwaard representeert de justitie. De blauwe bol in het midden heeft de vijf sterren van het hemel lichaam zuiderkruis. Rond de bol 27 sterren van zilver. De bol ligt op een grote ster met de nationale kleuren, groen en geel. Deze ster representeert de eenheid van de federatieve republiek. De bladeren aan weerszijden zijn links koffie, en rechts tabak. Beneden de tekst: federatieve republiek van Brazilië en de datum waarop de republiek werd uitgeroepen: 15 november 1889.

The sword represents justice. The blue globe in the midle has the 5 stars of the constellation southern cross. Around the globe are 27 stars of silver. The globe is lying on a bigger star with the national collors, green and yellow. This star represents the unity of the federal republic. The leaves on either sides are: left coffee and to the right tobacco. At the bottom the text: federal republic of Brazil and the date of the proclamation of the republic: november 15, 1889.
